The smooth cylindrical shape of risers can result in significant Vortex Induce Vibration (VIV) response in high current conditions, causing overall amplification of drag experienced by the riser.  For drilling risers, with more than 70% of the length covered with buoyancy modules, the drag effect is even greater and can result in suspended operations in high current conditions. Longitudinally Grooved Suppression (LGS®) is a low profile VIV suppression technology that significantly decreases VIV response and drag.

This presentation presents the correlation of lab tests results with field trial results on a drilling riser and presents the adaptation of the technology for a pipeline free span application.

Who should attend
Riser analysist, project engineers, project managers, drilling contractors
