Dr. Paula Perez CIGOMDr. Paula Perez
Researcher, Scientific and High Education Research Center from Ensenada (CICESE)- Department of Physical Oceanography

Title of presentation:
Analysis of oil spill scenarios

Paula Pérez Brunius graduated from Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1996 and obtained a PhD in Physical Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, USA, in 2002. After two years working at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, she returned to Mexico in 2005 to continue her postdoctoral degree at CICESE, where she is currently a Researcher in the Department of Physical Oceanography.
Her research interests have ranged from physical processes that occur on large oceanic scales such as the meridional circulation of the Atlantic, to increasingly smaller scales such as those involved in the mixing and dispersal of tracers in the Gulf of Mexico. Also of interest are the biophysical interactions relevant to the population dynamics of marine species in the region near the Pacific coast of Baja California and in the Gulf of Mexico. Her main working tool is the analysis of data obtained in the field, with particular interest in data measured by drifting instruments. In the Gulf of Mexico she has been a Principal Investigator in three group projects focused on the monitoring of various oceanographic variables: the most extensive is the program of continuous measurements of currents in the deep Gulf of Mexico financed by PEMEX, and complemented by a program of measurements with acoustically tracked subsurface floats funded by the US BOEM agency. Currently, she is part of the coordinating committee of a multi-institutional and interdisciplinary project (CIGoM) that addresses the issue of oil spills in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico financed by the SENER-CONACYT-Hidrocarburos fund, Mexico.
