The idea of autonomy is not new. Remote controlled vehicles led to the first autonomous car prototypes in the early 1900’s, but over the past 20 years the dream of science fiction stories has become a functional reality. Autonomous Survey Vehicles (ASVs) are becoming increasingly more popular across multiple industries, from defense and research to fisheries and renewables. Technological advancements in shrinking hardware has made it possible for autonomous platforms to decrease in size and carry more sensors. ASVs decrease human exposure offshore, enabling surveys of more remote regions. With advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and the introduction of Low Earth Orbiting Satellites (LEOS), this is only the beginning. However, as with self-driving cars, regulation of operations cannot keep up and often limit operation. This presentation will discuss how ASVs are used in the industry, the challenges they currently face, and the what the future might hold.
