Objective of the course

  • Provide overview of flow assurance and the fundamentals of flow management for subsea systems
  • Provide an understanding of the principles of flow assurance and multiphase flow, as well as the prevention, mitigation and remediation of flow assurance issues that may arise during operations

Presenters

Dr. Michael C. Mai

Dr. Michael C. Mai has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Mai worked at Conoco for approximately ten years in their upstream technology department providing research and technical support to operations in multiphase flow simulation, CFD, and production chemistry.  In 1996 he co-founded Multiphase Solutions, Inc. (MSi), where he served as Principal Consultant in flow assurance and online pipeline management system development and support.  In 2004, MSi was acquired by Wood Group and Dr. Mai continued to serve as President of the company helping to grow the flow assurance consulting and software business to 175 people in seven offices globally.  In 2014, Dr. Mai became Global Managing Director of Process Solutions within Wood Group and is now the Vice President of Intelligent Operations in Wood Group’s Automation and Control business.
Dr. Taras Makogon

Dr. Taras Makogon is a Flow Assurance Principal Consultant for Wood Group.  His primary focus is to help oil and gas companies solve complex fluid problems in operations, and to design new systems to prevent future problems based on experience. Dr. Makogon has been gainfully employed since 1988 in the energy industry helping people move faster and live longer, and has over 20 years of experience in flow assurance and production chemistry with supermajor and smaller companies.  He has an Engineering degree from the Gubkin Oil and Gas University, MBA in Finance from the Houston Baptist University and a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.  He holds several patents and currently serves as the Treasurer of the SPE Flow Assurance Technical Section.
Dr. Prabu Parthasarathy

Dr. Prabu Parthasarathy provides technical consulting for flow assurance issues, concentrating on thermal and hydraulic issues, multiphase flow modelling, single phase liquid pressure surge issues, and CFD analysis.  He has over 15 years of industry experience and has managed flow assurance studies in concept, FEED, detailed design and operational stages.  As Regional Manager of Wood Group’s Perth office, he has led numerous projects offering technical advisory and execution.  He has experience on working on deepwater projects in the GoM and W. Australia, dealing with diverse subjects such as hydrate management, slugging in various riser configurations, CRA cooling design in pipelines, waxing issues, DEH and MEG system design, and life of field flow assurance management.Dr. Parthasarathy has an MS and PhD from the University of Houston, specializing in the area of flow simulations, particularly in developing numerical simulation codes for solid-liquid flows.  Dr. Parthasarathy is the Sr. Manager of Intelligent Operations in Wood Group’s Automation and Control business, coordinating Wood Group’s global team of flow assurance consultants.
