Naphthenate” is the general oil and gas industry term used to describe the operational challenges associated with saponification of various carboxylic and naphthenic acid species present in some crude oils. The resulting soaps are intensely interfacially active and can form highly persistent emulsions which are often accompanied by significant sludge formation. This presentation presents a literature review regarding current oil industry understanding of naphthenate scale formation mechanisms, along with an up-to-date summary of established and novel state of the art technologies employed for its control and management. A new model is proposed to describe the various operational manifestations and the dominant influencing factors for their formation; this has been termed the Continuum Model.

Presenter - Dr. Jonathan Wylde - Technical Director

Dr. Jonathan Wylde serves as the Director of Technology at SPL and is based in Houston, TX, where he is responsible for coordination of flow assurance and production chemical related projects for the oil and gas industry. Dr. Wylde has spent 20 years prior to SPL working in the chemical service sector where he successfully contributed to innovation and development advancement across multiple production chemistry topics and channels, including technical, operational, sales and business development. As an Honorary Associate Professor at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, Dr. Wylde has authored over 200 papers and patents and has served / is serving on the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) committees for the International Scale Conference, Oilfield Chemical Symposium and Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) and is actively serving as an Associate Editor for SPE Production and Operations and JPT and as a Technical Editor for SPE Production and Operations and the SPE Journal.
