Naphthenate” is the general oil and gas industry term used to describe the operational challenges associated with saponification of various carboxylic and naphthenic acid species present in some crude oils. The resulting soaps are intensely interfacially active and can form highly persistent emulsions which are often accompanied by significant sludge formation. This presentation presents a literature review regarding current oil industry understanding of naphthenate scale formation mechanisms, along with an up-to-date summary of established and novel state of the art technologies employed for its control and management. A new model is proposed to describe the various operational manifestations and the dominant influencing factors for their formation; this has been termed the Continuum Model. |
