Drilling ship Drilling 101 is mainly for non-drilling support and cross-functional staff to provide an overview and understanding of the drilling process.  Equipment and terminology are explained in simple terms. Attendees will receive a basic overview of drilling subsea wells, and a 1-2 hour driling chair simulator session.

All Support and cross-discipline staff that desire or need an overview of drilling process for subsea wells.

Performance Objectives
  • Provides a brief history of drilling
  • Provides awareness level understanding of drilling wells together with equipment, terminology, and the hazards associated with drilling
  • Presents drilling riser and conductor analysis/operations
  • Discusses the fundamentals of and need for casings and liners
  • Explains drilling fluids and the circulating system
  • Covers the steps involved in the completions process and related equipment
  • Discussion includes subsea well control: what is a blowout?, BOP stack components, riser equipment and BOP controls
  • New technologies will be presented including automation, equipment monitoring, and setting new limits
  • 1-2 hour drilling chair simulator session


About the presenters

Curt Kling, Product Line Manager BOP Controls, National Oilwell Varco
Curt graduated from the United States Army Intelligence School Devens (USAISD) as an electronics technician in 1990 and served in the US Army until 1995. He has occupied multiple positions related to subsea controls since 1995 including assembly, offshore service, engineering and sales. He joined NOV as a product line manager for BOP Controls in 2013 and is currently the Product Line Manager for Subsea BOP Controls, Land BOP Controls and BOP Rigsentry condition monitoring services.  








Wesley Hunter, Product Line Manager Pressure Control, National Oilwell Varco
Wesley joined NOV in 2009 after receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. Since then he has held various engineering positions within installation and commissioning, design validation testing, new product development, condition-based maintenance, and applied data analytics of drilling equipment. Currently Wesley is the Product Line Manager for NOV’s Pressure Control Group supporting sales, marketing, and engineering of all pressure control equipment.







Randy Schulze, Product Line Manager BPOs & Stacks Offshore, National Oilwell Varco
Randy has 45 years’ experience in the offshore oil and gas drilling equipment industry, including several years in the United Kingdom, Russia, India and Singapore. During his career Randy has worked in engineering, service, repair, sales and manufacturing of Subsea BOP Stacks, Offshore Motion Compensation and Subsea BOP Control Systems. Randy is currently the Product Line Manager for Subsea BOPs and Stacks.








Mahesh Sonawane, Principal Engineer, 2H Offshore
Mahesh Sonawane is a Principal Engineer with 2H Offshore and has 12 years of experience in riser engineering. He is a licensed PE in the state of Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M in 2007 with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and started his career with 2H as a riser engineer. Over his career he has been involved with over a 100 drilling and intervention riser studies serving clients worldwide.
